With more than 9.9 million registered potential stem cell donors globally, the DKMS family is the largest network of donor centres in the fight against blood cancer. Bioinformatics Scientist (f/m/d)

Since 2013 we perform genotyping of HLA markers using Illumina's NGS platforms in combination with in-house developed reagents and internally developed software for data analysis. Besides large-scale routine typing operations we have always been pioneering the application of novel technologies. We are engaged in actively exploring the potential of cutting edge NGS technologies (PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) for HLA typing. We continuously work on including further genetic markers (e.g., KIR, MIC) in our upfront donor typing profile, we characterize novel HLA alleles and collaborate on scientific projects that support our fight against blood cancer. The Bioinformatics team operates at the interface of algorithm development, developing analysis routines and workflow implementations for HLA, KIR, and bloodgroup genotyping. We are a team with diverse interests and experience in evolution, population genetics, developmental biology and next-generation sequencing (NGS) analyses. Rapidly growing data volumes and advancing technologies are enabling the profiling of HLA and KIR genotypes at a rate not seen before and raising novel questions in statistical analyses and algorithm development.

Your responsibilities:

  • You will participate in or lead research projects, analyse and interpret complex NGS data, and draft manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • You will establish and apply analysis pipelines to perform large-scale de novo haplotype assembly of the MHC and KIR regions.
  • You will be involved in developing and testing data analysis infrastructure to enable HLA and KIR genotyping using single-molecule sequencing technologies.
  • You will cooperate with other departments of the company and external partners to transfer your work from an R&D setting to high-throughput routine.
  • You will prepare and deliver presentations at national and international meetings.

Must have:

  • You hold a degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, mathematics or a related field.
  • You have proven experience in bioinformatics programming (R/Bioconductor and/or Python) in a Linux/Unix environment.
  • You have expert knowledge of bioinformatics software and algorithms for next-generation sequence analysis (de novo assembly, mapping, quality assessment, variant detection, statistical inference).
  • Sound knowledge of statistics and data analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and scientific creativity.
  • Excellent command of German and English, written and spoken.


  • Familiarity with statistical modelling (e.g., machine learning).
  • Experience with assembly graph algorithms.
  • Experience with RDBMS and knowledge of compiled languages (e.g., C++, Java, or C#).
  • Experience with the HLA genotyping.
