DFG funded PhD position (65 %) in Düsseldorf, Germany (Department of Neurology)

This job ad is out of date. Find related Jobs here.

The Department of Neurology, Heinrich-Heine University Duesseldorf, Germany, offers a position for a PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) student. Applicants should hold a diploma/Master degree in biology, biochemistry or related natural sciences. PhD candidates should have experience in cell culture and biochemical techniques. Training in animal models, iron metabolism and/or redox biology would be an asset.
The project of the requested PhD student is a joint project of the Universities Duesseldorf (Carsten Berndt) and Greifswald (Christopher Horst Lillig) dedicated to the diseases multiple sclerosis (Duesseldorf, in particular Duesseldorf MS Center, Prof. O. Aktas) and cardiac hypertrophy (Greifswald). Both diseases are characterized as iron accumulating diseases. We and others identified oxidoreductases of the thioredoxin family as important regulators of cellular iron homeostasis. Interestingly, these proteins are FeS coordinating enzymes themselves. We are interested in the role of these FeS-cluster coordinating oxidoreductases during progression of the diseases and new potential therapeutic strategies based on their functions. This project provides the possibility to investigate physiological phenomena in the range between whole animals and single atoms.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with documented experience in experimental scientific work that are interested in this research field and in the implementation of different techniques in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, and animal (mouse) disease models.
The position is embedded in and funded by the DFG (german research foundation) priority program 1927 „FeS for life“. Next to scientific excellence, the priority program guarantees visits of national and international meetings, summer schools, and lab rotations based on a variety of collaborations. Salary will be based on the TVL (65% E13).
Please send your application including CV, certificates, summary of former research activities and names of two references via email to carsten.berndt@hhu.de (deadline: 1st of November). Please refer to the reference number berndt_jobvector2.
