Doctoral Student in Hyperpolarized MRI/MRS (f/m)

The Department of Preclinical Imaging and Radiopharmacy is a powerful research oriented group focusing on new tracers and biomarkers as well as in vivo biomedical research utilizing novel imaging technology, and developing the next generation Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and multimodality imaging equipment. We are an interdisciplinary team of 55 researchers and technical employees with various backgrounds such as medicine, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, physics and mathematics. We maintain many collaborations with basic researchers and clinical colleagues at our university hospital, the science faculty of the University of Tübingen as well as with many scientific partners worldwide. Our research is further driven by fast-paced technological progress in other analytical areas such as microscopy and omics technology. Among new infrastructures a major goal is to develop hyperpolarized techniques for MRI and MRS applications.

The emerging technology of hyperpolarized MR allows, in combination with MR active nuclei, the investigation of metabolic pathways, and has the potential of triple imaging modalities in a range of pathologies. This technology will pave avenues for entirely new applications of MR, and requires demanding technological developments and conception of applications that allow utilization of the quantitative spatial and temporally correlated imaging information to investigate physiology and pathophysiology in the fields of oncology, neurology, immunology and other. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated scientist with strong background in the development and/or application of novel methods for MRI/MRS and interest in biomedical questions. The candidate should have the necessary skills to integrate and implement the hardware and software of the new platform, to develop comprehensive protocols, and to work with advanced data mining approaches and multiparametric image analysis strategies. An university degree in biology or biochemistry and technical skills are mandatory. Experience in working with small animals and knowledge of biological processes is desirable. The position demands strong commitment and requires independent working as well as working in a highly interdisciplinary team.

The candidate will also work in close collaboration with the high-field MR department at the Max-Planck Institute (MPI) for Biological Cybernetics. The applications of the new hyperpolarizing equipment will be embedded in both laboratories offering latest small animal imaging technology such as microPET, microCT, 7T and 14.1 T MRI, 14.1 T high-resolution MRS, optical imaging and clinical/preclinical PET/MRI including a 9.4T human MR system.
