Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) denotes a family of hereditary ocular disorders characterized by progressive retinal degeneration. Functional defects manifest early in the rod photosystem and lead to degeneration of photoreceptors and thinning of the retina. At later stages RP leads to loss of high-acuity vision and often complete blindness. This project is part of a collaborative research project with one of the leading pharmaceutical companies and aims at developing a novel and optimized gene therapy for a specific form of retinitis pigmentosa. The main task is the evaluation of novel candidate gene therapy treatments in a preclinical model of the disease and selection of the optimal candidate for future translational studies. A suitable candidate has an MSc degree (or equivalent) in a biomedical or natural sciences discipline with strong background in pharmacology, ophthalmology, or neurosciences and hands-on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology or cell biology.
