PhD candidate ("Illuminating microbial dark matter by single cell genomics-shedding light on the phylum Chloroflexi”)

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH, Braunschweig offers the position for a
PhD candidate

In the group of Single Cell Genomics we search for a PhD candidate to investigate Chloroflexi genomes from the combination of single cell genomics, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, thereby filling gaps in the tree of life and elucidating their physiology and metabolic capability in the environment.
Among the duties and responsibilities of the candidate will be DNA extractions, PCR and the sequencing of bacterial genomes (Illumina, PacBio), with an emphasis on bioinformatics analyses of sequencing data and large genomic datasets.
Required qualifications are a Master's level university degree in the life sciences, or related, and a strong interest in microbial genetics and bioinformatics. A good command of English is essential.  Programming skills (e. g. C, Python, Perl, and or R) are desired and experience with microbiological and molecular biological methods will be a plus.

Appointment will be initially for 2 years and subject to extension based on a positive interim evaluation. The salary level will be TV-L E 13, 65%.

DSMZ offers a lively, international research environment with well-equipped laboratories and computational facilities.
