PhD Position Immunology & Infection

A PhD fellowship in Immunology and Infectiology is offered at the Life & Medical Sciences (LIMES) Institute at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn, Germany, in cooperation with the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine at the University of Düsseldorf starting from Oct 1, 2016.

The PhD fellowship is available in the frame of the Manchot Graduate School “Molecules of Infection III” financed by the Jürgen Manchot Foundation. The research program of the School focuses on the characterization and functional dissection of selected host-pathogen interactions at the molecular level. In doing so, it follows the highly successful approach adopted in the previous funding periods for MOI I and MOI II. The scholarship comprises inter alia a monthly allowance of 1,800€ over a period of 3.5 years as well as a budget for material expenses and financial support for the attendance of national and international conferences. For further information on the individual projects please see www.moi.hhu.de.

Project 14 supervised by Prof. Dr. Irmgard Förster and PD Dr. Heike Weighardt investigates the immunoregulatory role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) repressor in the defence against parasitic and bacterial infections. The AhR is a transcription factor, which plays an important role in the detoxification of xenobiotics, but is also responsible for the regulation of immune responses. The activity of the AhR is regulated by the AhR-repressor (AhRR) in a negative feedback response. In this project, we want to analyze the function of the AhRR specifically in myeloid cells and T cells during Toxoplasma gondii infection using newly developed conditional AhRR-KO mice. In addition, we aim at analyzing the role of the AhRR in a model of infectious colitis induced by Salmonella typhimurium. For further information see Brandstätter et al. Sci Rep 2016, doi:10.1038/srep26091 and www.limes-institut-bonn.de.

We are seeking passionate PhD candidates who are highly motivated to solve scientific questions with modern immunological approaches in a competitive environment. The ideal candidate holds a M.Sc. or Diploma with an above-average university degree in Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields with proven interest in immunology and infection. Excellent written and spoken English skills are mandatory.

All documents and instructions for application can be found on the webpage of the Manchot Graduate School at www.moi.hhu.de. The deadline for application is August 15, 2016. Candidates fulfilling the selection criteria are invited to Düsseldorf for an oral presentation and interview. The experimental work for Project 14 will be mainly performed at the LIMES Institute, Bonn. For further information please contact I. Förster (irmgard.foerster@uni-bonn.de) or H. Weighardt (heike.weighardt@uni-bonn.de).
