PhD Project: Identification of novel molecular players in translocation biogenesis

In the field of  “Cell Biology of Genome Maintenance” the research group of Dr. Vassilis Roukos offers the following PhD Project: Identification of novel molecular players in translocation biogenesis

Description:

We have recently developed a unique cell-based system to follow the fate of individual DSBs as they form translocations in living cells (Roukos et al., Science, 2013). These studies have identified distinct steps in the translocation process and have created an experimental framework to now dissect molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of oncogenic translocations. The aim of this PhD project is to identify novel factors influencing translocation formation and evaluate their contribution to the formation of recurrent oncogenic chromosome translocations frequently found in cancer patients. PhD students joining the lab will be trained to use molecular and cell biological methodologies in combination with state-of-the-art high-throughput microscopy techniques and superresolution microscopy. We are looking for highly motivated students who enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment to join our group. Prior experience with imaging related projects is an advantage, but not a requirement.

We offer
• The possibility to work on a cutting-edge project using state-of-the-art technology in a highly motivated research team
• A stimulating, diverse and international research environment
• Advanced training opportunities
• A competitive stipend

Required qualifications
• Master or Diploma
• Motivation to solve complex biological problems
• Excellent communication skills

Starting date: 1 April 2016 or later
Duration of stipend: 3 years, with the possibility of extension
