PhD Student (m/f) in Environmental Microbiology

The Helmholtz Zentrum München in Munich, Germany, is a member of one of the leading research associations in Europe - the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. The aim of our research is to proactively detect health risks involving humans and the environment, decoding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and developing concepts for prevention and therapy.

The POLLOX ERC project aims to elaborate a new perspective of the role of oxygen in what is currently considered as anoxic pollutant degradation in groundwater. We propose that oxygen-dependent degradation of pollutants can occur via long-distance electron transfer to oxygen as electron acceptor. We focus on different field and laboratory investigations and gradient cultivation strategies to investigate populations of filamentous bacteria capable of LDET from contaminated aquifers* and other groundwater systems.

A PhD position is available within a running ERC Consolidator Grant project at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. The Molecular Ecology Group of the Institute for Groundwater Ecology is seeking on the role of long-distance electron transfer by bacteria in groundwater systems for PhD Student (m/f) in Environmental Microbiology

Job Description
- work in a translational research project
- evaluate mechanisms underlying drug resistance, disease relapse, and cancer evolution using patient-derived leukemia cells, applying a multitude of up-to-date techniques including complex cloning, viral transduction, flow cytometry, cell culture, -OMICs data analysis
- closely interact with your associated PostDoc
- maintain close interdisciplinary interaction with collaborators
- critically evaluate scientific literature and develop your own experimental ideas and projects

Your Qualifications
- MSc in biology, molecular biomedicine, biotechnology, pharmacy, or a related subject
- experience in flow cytometry, molecular biology, and cell biology is welcome
- above average and sustained enthusiasm for science
- independent and responsible attitude, collaborative spirit
- good written and spoken English
