biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.
For the working group Genomics of Genetic Resources (GGR) we are looking for two PhD students.
Employment could start from 01.09.2016 for a period of 3 years (in compliance with the law “WissZeitVG”), provided the final approval of the project by the funding agency.
Who we are:
The group Genomics of Genetic Resources is contributing to the international efforts of sequencing the barley and wheat genomes – both among the most important crop species worldwide. We have developed extensive genomic resources and genomic tools to either discover, exploit or utilize genomic diversity for elucidation of mechanisms underlying agronomic traits. We are interested in structural variation of cereal genomes and its impact on genome and haplotype evolution. Recently, we started genotyping of the entire barley genetic resources collection of IPK (>20,000 accessions) as a first step to improve educated selection of genetic resources for allele mining or pre-breeding.
The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team (IPK Gatersleben, Julius-Kühn-Institute, private Industry) working on the map-based cloning of virus resistance genes in barley introgressed from the wild relative Hordeum bulbosum. Your task: high resolution genetic mapping of two resistance loci relying on NGS-sequening-based strategies. The work will build on state-of-the-art genomic resources for linking genetic data to the reference sequence of barley.
Applicants must hold a Diploma / Masters in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or areas of Agricultural Sciences. A strong background in standard methods of cereal molecular genetics is required. Own expertise in handling and analyzing large datasets and a solid theoretical background in genome analysis and genome mapping are important advantages. Strong communication skills in English are required. You have strong scientific writing and presentation skills and you are a team player.
