Senior Scientist biology, biochemistry - Research & Development - genotyping, cancer diagnostics

With more than 9.7 million registered potential stem cell donors globally, the DKMS family is the biggest network of donor centers in the fight against blood cancer. Every day, 19 patients receive matching stem cells from DKMS life savers – a new chance at life. DKMS Life Science Lab has become the world leading HLA genotyping lab, sequencing the HLA genes of way more than 1 million samples at high-resolution each year. Our success builds on continuous research, aiming at taking advantage of the latest innovations in molecular biology and next generation sequencing and adapting those to the field of immunogenetics.

To continue this success story we are looking for a scientist to be part of our R&D team in Dresden as

Senior Scientist (f/m/d) Research & Development

Since 2013 we perform genotyping of HLA markers using Illumina's NGS platforms in combination with in-house developed reagents and internally developed software for data analysis. Besides large-scale routine typing operations we have always been pioneering the application of novel technologies. We are engaged in actively exploring the potential of cutting edge NGS technologies (PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) for HLA typing. We continuously work on including further genetic markers (e.g., KIR, MIC) in our upfront donor typing profile, we characterize novel HLA alleles and collaborate on scientific projects that support our fight against blood cancer.

Your responsibilities:

  • Development of new NGS-based methods for HLA genotyping and cancer diagnostics
  • Plan, perform and analyze your scientific experiments independently
  • Cooperate with other departments of the company and external partners
  • Transfer your work from a R&D- to a high-throughput routine application
  • Draft manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present your scientific work at international conferences
  • Share your knowledge and support research assistants and students

Your qualifications:

  • You hold a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry or a related field
  • You have expertise in developing or improving molecular biology methods
  • Analytical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent command of the German and English language, written and spoken
  • Strong publication record desired
  • Experience with NGS and/or HLA genotyping desired
  • Experience with Bioinformatics (R, Python, SQL) desired

We offer:

  • A chance to do work that directly impacts blood cancer patients all over the world
  • A challenging and stimulating work environment with a focus on innovation
  • An open, friendly, multicultural team that embraces a culture of trust
  • Flexible working hours, a modern working space, and a family-friendly company culture
