Doctoral student (PhD) position in Microbiology/Plant Physiology

The Department of Microbiology at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, University of Potsdam invites applications for a
Doctoral student (PhD) position in Microbiology/Plant Physiology
The PhD project is focused on the regulation of carbon fixation in the colony-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. Microcystis is a harmful algal bloom cyanobacterium showing mass development in freshwater lakes around the globe. The success of this cyanobacterium gives rise to serious concerns by water authorities and entails high economic costs for bloom management. The project is centered on the activity and robustness of the bifunctional enzyme RubisCO in this multicellular microorganism.
The candidate shall develop single cell techniques for the quantitative assessment of the expression and metabolic activities of RubisCO, inorganic carbon uptake and photosynthesis in laboratory strains and field colonies of Microcystis. In the process we will differentiate between strains, which either are or are not able to produce the potent cyanobacterial toxin microcystin that is interfering with inorganic carbon adaptation of Microcystis. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Golm and involves both experimental and theoretical validation of the robustness of photosynthesis, growth and RubisCO carboxylation activities at the population level.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate, who is keen to develop own ideas on the project. A recent master degree in one of the following fields is required: microbiology, molecular biology, plant physiology. We expect excellent written and oral communication skills. Expertise in bioinformatics would be an advantage.
Beyond a three-year PhD position, recompensed according to the pay scale of German public service, we offer competent mentoring and working in a young team of motivated scientists in the exciting urban area of Berlin/Potsdam. Applications including cover letter (stating motivation, research interests, previous achievements, availability date), curriculum vitae and the names of two referees should be sent by 30th of October by email to editt@uni-potsdam.de. The position is available from 1st of December 2016. For further information please contact Prof. Elke Dittmann at the same email address.
