At the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – (HKI, www.leibniz-hki.de) we investigate the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identify targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. By integrating scientific results and derived mathematical models, we are contributing towards the development of the systems biology of infection. For the succession of the position of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Guthke we are looking for a

Head of the Research Group
Systems Biology and Bioinformatics

starting March 2016. The position is initially available for five years with the possibility of a permanent contract after a positive evaluation of the research group.

We are looking for a scientist with an excellent publication record and extensive research experience in omics-data analysis and mathematical modelling in microbiology, biotechnology, and medicine. We highly desire expertise in data management, bioinformatic analysis and mathematical modelling of transcriptome, proteome and metabolome data (omics data includiing RNA-Seq and ChIp-Seq; inference and analysis of regulatory network models) as well as structural and functional genome annotation of microorganisms, especially fungi. The group leader should oversee an innovative research programme in the area of systems biology of microbial infections, of host-pathogen interactions, and of microbial secondary metabolism. A particularly intense collaboration with both the experimental research groups at HKI – partially as service – as well as with the other bioinformatics/systems biology teams of the institutes on Beutenberg Campus and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is expected. Furthermore, the group leader will be involved in teaching relevant courses at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena.

The research group is tightly integrated into large collaborative research projects of the HKI, e.g., the excellence graduate school Jena School for Microbial Communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de) and the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio FungiNet (www.funginet.de). Jena has a strong scientific focus on microbial communication, infection biology, natural product research, and systems biology. The city offers a highly attractive research environment that is characterised by close cooperation with the local biotech industry. We expect the candidate to further intensify these collaborations.

Salary will be paid according to the regulations of the TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). The HKI is an equal opportunities employer striving to increase the share of women in the university and strongly encouraging women to apply. Handicapped applicants with equal competence and qualification will be given preference.
