The research group “Molecular Neurophysiology" at the Institute of Physiological Genomics (Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich) offers at the earliest possible date, but latest at 1st September 2018, a position as

Research Assistant / Postdoc
(pay scale E13 TV-L)

at full time employment (100 %) with the option of further extension (up to five years). Importantly, the position involves teaching (6 SWS) of medical students in neurophysiology which is exclusively done in German. We seek highly qualified individuals who are motivated, flexible, collaborative, detail-oriented, have the ability to multitask, and are committed to research excellence. The successful candidate should have a PhD degree or equivalent with a strong background in retinal or neuroscience research.
 

About us:
We are a highly motivated research group dedicating our work to investigations how the neuroprotective potential of the major macroglial cell of the retina, the Müller cell, can be enhanced under disease conditions aiming to develop treatment options for complex retinal degeneration. We define ourselves by high scientific standards as well as a strong relation to translational approaches. Focus of our research projects is the combination of expression profiling of distinct retinal cell types in comparison Müller glia and gene therapeutic modulation of validated candidate genes. In this context, we are interested to modify Müller cell gliosis and to elucidate how this effects their neuron-supportive functions.

About you:
  • PhD in biology, biochemistry or equivalent
  • Broad expertise in basic cell-molecular and biochemical techniques (Western blotting, Immunoprecipitations, gene expression analysis, cloning, cell culture, AAV- or lentiviral transductions, microscopy etc.)
  • Experience and skills in the following techniques: mouse handling, Next-Generation-Sequencing, bioinformation analysis of big data sets, use of viral vectors for gene addition or gene silencing approaches, shRNA-mediated knock down
  • High motivation to independently drive the experimental and project design
  • Rapid understanding and independent analysis of complex data
  • Experience in writing scientific reports and papers
  • Very good knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office and graphic programs, statistical software, bioinformatics tools and online tools (e.g. Corel Drow, GraphPad Prism, R, BLAST)
  • Strong communication skills (oral presentations and writing)
  • Experience in teaching and practical training of students
  • Fluent both in written and spoken English and German (mandatory for the teaching associated with the position)
