Master thesis in Biology: Therapeutic potential of electric fields for neuronal regeneration

The Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory of the Neurology Department of the University Clinics at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf invites applications by excellent undergraduate students for an exciting interdisciplinary master project in the field of neuronal regeneration, starting September 5th, 2016.

Lesions to the central nervous system (CNS), i.e. brain or spinal cord injury, cause live-long functional deficits for the patients. We use cell culture and animal models to explore the possibilities of therapeutic interventions causing axonal regeneration of injured neurons.

This master thesis focuses on the application of an electric field in order to increase the extent of axonal regeneration after CNS injury. The thesis involves cell culture methods for preparation and manipulation of cortical neurons, microscopic methods, like fluorescence and laserscanmicroscopy, immunohistochemistry and electric stimulation of living cells in a bioreactor chamber. The aim of the thesis is to find suitable stimulation parameters of the regenerative electric field in primary neurons with the outlook to transfer the therapy into  the in vivo setting in a future project.

We invite applications from highly qualified undergraduate students with a large interest in neurobiology. Partial financing during the master thesis is possible.
