Ph.D. Student in Virology / Molecular Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany offers a position for a PhD student working on host-pathogen interactions with special emphasis on “Morphogenesis of hepatitis B virus particles: Strategies, mechanisms and host factors” in the group of Prof. Dr. Reinhild Prange.

Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a global pathogen responsible for acute and chronic liver disease. Persistent HBV infections are currently incurable. With the aim to improve knowledge of the biology of HBV infection and to seek more effective antiviral strategies, we are studying HBV particle morphogenesis and its coordination by host cell factors. HBV produces not only complete infectious virions, but also non-enveloped capsids and empty envelope particles that are thought to support viral transmission and viral immune evasion. In order to form and release its particle types, HBV exploits different strategies and host factors, like ubiquitin adaptors, ubiquitin ligases, proteins of the multivesicular endosome system, autophagic proteins, and Rab GTPases. The participating cellular protein networks and mechanisms and their differential use by the virus are not fully resolved in their complexity, hierarchy and regulation and will be characterized in continuing works using a range of cell biology, virology, biochemical, and imaging approaches.

Applicants should have a Diploma/Master Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine or a related field. Knowledge in virology and cell biology as well as a good background in standard molecular biological methods is expected. We are looking forward to meet applicants motivated by true scientific curiosity and commitment for the project. The PhD student will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of virological, cell biological and immunological scientists. Further information is available:

The project is sponsored for three years (salary TVL 13, 50%) by the DFG and should start in Spring 2016. The call is open until January 31th, 2016.
