PhD in Bioinformatics: Epigenetics of Human Blood Cells

The group "Stem Cell Biology and Cellular Engineering“ at RWTH Aachen University Medical School is offering a position for a Ph.D. student (m/f).

Focus of this project is the development of epigenetic methods for blood counts based on DNA methylation data. The analysis of the composition of cell types in blood is one of the most frequently used diagnostic test. We have established a simple method to determine blood counts based on DNA methylation at specific sites in the genome (Frobel et al., Clin Chem. 2018. doi: 10.1373/clinchem.2017.279935). This method shall now be further developed and validated.

Activities and responsibilities

DNA methylation profiles will be analyzed in hematopoietic subsets with different sequencing approaches. This data needs to be evaluated and compiled into deconvolution algorithms. This project will be funded by a VIP+ project (BMBF) with the perspective to generate an in vitro diagnostic tool that may be further marketed.

Qualification profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student with a strong background in bioinformatics and epigenetics. Experience in wet lab biology would be advantageous. Willingness for teamwork, the ability to work independently, and excellent English language skills are a prerequisite.

We offer a highly interactive and well equipped environment in a team with international partners, a broad spectrum of methods, and a highly relevant topic. (homepage:
Funding is available for at least three years (65% TV-L E13).
