PhD position 14: Multifaceted analysis of coagulant activity in venous thrombo-inflammation (Mainz/Maastricht)

We offer a PhD position for biomedical doctoral students at the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (University Medical Center Mainz, Germany) and the School for Cardiovascular Disease in Maastricht (CARIM, Netherlands). As this project is part of the MSCA ITN “Thrombo-Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease” (TICARDIO), you will be trained in an international, interdisciplinary joint doctoral degree program striving to train the next generation of biomedical researchers. Your PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Philipp Wild in Mainz and by Dr. Henri Spronk/Prof. Dr. Hugo ten Cate in Maastricht. Furthermore, a research stay at Bayer (Wuppertal, Germany, Dr. Stefan Heitmeier) offers you the opportunity to get insights into research in the industry.

Activities and responsibilities

Project description
The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) in Mainz is a powerful population-based study that addresses determinants of thrombo-inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease and venous thrombo-embolism. Such longitudinal studies with large population cohorts are needed for the diagnosis of early stages of venous thrombosis, linked to altered coagulation and inflammation. Our hypothesis is that the GHScan uncover new mechanisms of thrombosis by state-of-the-art molecular/subclinical profiling and by integrating multi-dimensional datasets.
You will be trained in comprehensive coagulation activity testing. You will use plasma from the GHS to identify intermediate phenotypes of venous thrombo-inflammatory disorders by comparing the prothrombotic state and the broad inflammatory profile. You will perform a comprehensive, pathway-integrating multi-dimensional modelling of information on the modifying role of genetic variability in relation to protein profiling. You will complete the population-based work by adding information of already available bio-databases from individuals with acute venous thromboembolism. During the time at Bayer, you will acquire state-of-the-art expertise in analysing large datasets and apply new analytical methodology. To link the population-based analyses to mechanistic insights, an endothelial cell-based thrombin generation assay will be used, allowing the modelling of alternative thrombo-inflammation pathways and interfere with these in vitro. Forward translational insight will be obtained by determining in vivo and in vitro effects of distinct types of anticoagulants.

Qualification profile

>> You have a Master degree (or equivalent) in epidemiology, biomedical sciences or similar
>> You are in the first four years of your research career and do not hold a doctoral degree
>> Your must not have resided in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment
>> Ideally, you have thorough biomedical interest and knowledge, an affinity for and/or experience in bioinformatics and an interest and/or knowledge of handling large data sets.
