PhD position in OXYTRAIN training program on Applied Enzymology

The OXYTRAIN training network offers PhD fellowship for a program on Applied Enzymology research. OXYTRAIN is a joint academic/non-academic training initiative supporting the convergence of biochemistry, enzyme engineering and biotechnology.
The most talented and motivated student will be selected for a 4-year advanced multidisciplinary research training, starting November 1st 2017.

The industrial research will be led and co-supervised by Dr. Jitka Eryılmaz and Dr. Ozgur Cobanoglu, in the Technology Development Department at İSKO (Bursa/Turkey) for the initial first 3-years, and the academic research will be directed by Prof. Marco Fraaije (Groningen/The Netherlands) for the last year, where the student will obtain his/her diploma.
Fellows will obtain specialist training through cutting-edge research projects, specialist advanced courses and training schools, complemented by workshops on transferable skills. In addition, fellows will have the opportunity to go abroad on international secondments at leading places in academia and industry.
The OXYTRAIN research program aims at developing effective oxygenases that can be used for selective oxidation reactions. The exploitation of this type of biocatalysts is lagging behind and full exploration of oxygenases requires dedicated training and development of technical tools. In order to overcome these challenges, the OXYTRAIN consortium will focus its efforts on three main research objectives:
  • Integrating structural and mechanistic insights into enzyme-driven oxygen activation and subsequent substrate oxygenation;
  • Generating a collection of industrially applicable oxygenases by design and engineering of oxygenases using state-of-the-art protein engineering methodologies;
  • Developing innovative methods for efficient usage of oxidative enzymes in research and industry.

Project Title: Application of monooxygenases in denim dyeing and finishing (ESR 3, Work Package 1)

Objectives: Industrially applicable monooxygenases generated in close collaboration with RUG and UNIPV will be evaluated as potential biocatalysts for the conversion of indole derivatives to a variety of indigoid dyes. For the most promising enzymes and processes, an integration of the method into already existing production system will be conducted.

Methodology: The work will involve the study of industrial indigo dyeing processes, reproduction of enzyme preparations in larger-scale, and modifying the standard dyeing processes to incorporate newly developed enzymatic process. The characterization of the dye will also be performed by means of photon spectroscopies in house.

Expected Results: (i) Enzyme solutions applicable in production line; (ii) isolated indigoid dyes for chemical characterization; (iii) protocols for application of the processes on textile fabric as indigoid dyeing process; (iv) proof-of-concept industrial application of the method.


The OXYTRAIN Training Program consists of the following main training elements:
1) Training through research (WP1-4): To create a platform of mobility and training of researchers by means of tailored individual research projects including secondments within the Network (between beneficiaries and/or partner organisations), providing exchange of knowhow among researchers and partners.

2) Scientific courses and training (WP5): To enhance the attractiveness of a career in front-line areas of biochemistry, enzyme engineering for biocatalysis and biotechnology, we provide a structured training program encompassing 4 scientific courses, which covers a portfolio of inter-disciplinary techniques relevant for the OXYTRAIN project and the training of fellows. Additionally, each ESR will attend specific courses relevant for his/her research within the local hosts. ESRs will also receive scientific training through attending and contributing to workshops, international conferences, seminars, etc.

3) Transferable skills training (WP5): 3 special courses will be organised to provide the ESRs with training in project management, entrepreneurship, innovation, IPR, scientific writing and integrity, etc. Besides, each ESR will attend special courses within each university covering specific themes: publishing in English, presentation skills, writing a grant proposal, science to market, and science communication. Several activities will provide ESRs with career development skills, including the development and discussion of a Career Development Plan. The ESRs’ engagement in key management roles will provide management experience appropriate for a future group leader. In year 4 of the Network, ESRs will organise an international scientific conference (“Mechanistic and applied aspects of oxygenases”) in close collaboration with their supervisors, providing them with key training on organisation and management skills.

Good to know before you apply
To qualify for a position as a PhD student in the ITN, you need to be within the first four years (full – time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. Further, at the time of recruitment, you must not have lived or worked for more than 12 months in the country of your future host organization in the 3 years immediately prior to the start of the PhD project.
