PhD position in Bioinformatics

At the Department of Chemistry and Mineralogy/Institute of Bioanalytical Chemistry within the BMBF funded project "Integration of oxidative stress into systems medicine view for obesity and obesity related complications" the following position has to be filled as soon as possible:
PhD position
Employment contract (fixed-term-contract, limited up to March 31, 2019)
(standard public service salary, TV-L 13, 50 % part time)
Project description: The project aims to evaluate the impact of oxidative stress on etiology of obesity and obesity related complications using Systems Medicine environment. The project will combine a wide array of approaches including mass spectrometry based omics data acquisition, clinical characterization, statistical evaluation, and mathematical modeling. Data on lipid and protein oxidation will be integrated via genome-scale metabolic modeling and regulatory protein networks analysis to obtain systems medicine view on metabolically healthy and diseased (insulin sensitive vs resistant) obesity phenotypes and identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

  • Analysis of proteomics and lipidomics datasets
  • Statistical evaluation of multi-omics data
  • Data integration using mathematical modeling
  • Genome-scale metabolic modeling and regulatory protein networks analysis
  • Database development and maintenance
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Master of Science (or equivalent degree) in chemistry, biochemistry, or bioinformatics sciences
  • Knowledge in protein and/or lipid biochemistry
  • Programming skills in Python, R and/or MATLAB
  • Working knowledge in database development and management (e. g. MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Experience in biostatistics
  • Experience with Unix/Linux, CUDA parallel computing, C & C++ programming, processing of SBML (Systems Biology Markup Language) files, biopathways data handling (e.g. KEGG, DAVID), source code management system (git, hg) would be an advantage
  • Good knowledge in oral and written English (C1-level)
  • Motivation to work in a larger multidisciplinary and multinational research group
  • Good communication skills
