PhD Position in Environmental Microbiology and Chemistry

The position is in the field of environmental fate assessment with focus on molecular microbiology analysis of antibiotic resistance genes and effects of antibiotics and their transformation products in the aquatic environment. Interest and experience in microbial molecular biology techniques such as qPCR and modern population analyses are desired. Further, experience with the analytical determination of antibiotics is of advantage but no prerequisite.
The successful candidate will be expected to: a) study the absolute and relative abundance of clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes and their carrier b) to characterize the impact of antibiotics and their transformation products on natural bacterial populations, c) apply analytical methods for the determination of antibiotics and their transformation products using LC-MS/MS, and d) modelling the interaction between evolution of antibiotic resistances and occurrence of antibiotics.
We offer comprehensive supervision and support in an international and interdisciplinary team. The candidate benefits from an interdisciplinary cooperation between two different institutes at the KIT (IFG and EBI), a large scientific network, a supportive atmosphere between the different institutes at KIT and from close collaborations with the industry. The candidate`s personal and professional development is explicitly fostered (conferences, workshops, stays abroad etc.).
The ideal candidate has a background in environmental microbiology including molecular biology, analytical chemistry, and environmental sciences. A Master or Diploma degree, good communication skills, a good command of English and sound computer skills are required. German language skills are an asset. International candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply.
