PhD position in Mitochondrial Membrane Biology (Düsseldorf)

PhD position in Mitochondrial Membrane Biology (Düsseldorf)

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student for a project on mitochondrial membrane biology in Prof. Andreas Reichert Laboratory, Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I, Medical School, Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany. We are an international team with a highly motivating working environment.

Description of the project:
Mitochondrial cristae remodeling is necessary to regulate various mitochondrial functions like respiration or cell death. Several human diseases like neurodegenerative disorders, cancers, diabetes or cardiomyopathies have been associated with aberrant cristae structure. We are addressing the fundamental question of how cristae are formed and how they influence the pathogenesis of these diseases. Recent studies from our group as well as other groups have identified and characterized a novel complex (MICOS) to regulate cristae morphogenesis. In this project we want to analyze the components and functions of MICOS complex in the mammalian system. We use techniques of mammalian cell culture, biochemical analysis, electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy for addressing these questions.

We are looking for a candidate having
  • a master degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, chemistry, or other closely related fields of natural sciences
  • practical experience in laboratory work and basic biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology techniques
  • very good proficiency in written and spoken English
  • strong interest to work in an international team
  • passion for science and the motivation to work on an innovative project
