The lab of Milos Galic at the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics, University of Muenster, is looking for a PhD student working on:

Nanoscale Forces in Neurons

The project: In this interdisciplinary project, we will investigate how neuronal architecture and synaptic transmission are affected by biophysical interactions between force-generating proteins and curved plasma membranes. These studies will advance our understanding how forces acting at the cell surface regulate shape and function of neurons.

The lab:  Our lab investigates the spatio-temporal dynamics of force detection and force regulation in cells. Coordination of intra- and intercellular forces occurs in a number of cellular systems and is believed to be a crucial element that contributes among others to cell architecture, directionality and speed of cell migration, as well as collective cell behavior. Despite its importance, the molecular mechanisms underlying force-control have largely remained unclear. To investigate these control mechanisms, our lab combines classical cell biology with nanofabrication, synthetic biology and computational analysis of microscopic images with high spatial and temporal resolution.

Requirements:  You want to work at the interface of cell biology and biophysics. A background in neurobiology, cell biology, microscopy, biophysics or physics is desired but not necessary.
