PhD positions at the International Max Planck Research School in Chemical and Molecular Biology

The IMPRS-CMB is a joint PhD program between the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (MPI-MP), the Technical University (TU) Dortmund, the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). All four institutes are closely connected and located in the Ruhr Metropolitan Area, a vibrant, open and multicultural region in Germany.

The program was established over 15 years ago and has continuously provided high quality training in the field of life sciences combined with a collaborative, interdisciplinary and young environment, where students can lay the foundations for their future career.

Activities and responsibilities

The International Max Planck Research School in Chemical and Molecular Biology (IMPRS-CMB) is looking for talented and motivated PhD candidates of all nationalities to carry out novel projects in the following research areas:

We expect excellent academic scores, prior research experience but most importantly commitment and enthusiasm to face the many challenges of a PhD project.

Qualification profile

Applicants should hold (or expect to hold prior to the start of their PhD) a University Master Degree in one of the following disciplines (or a related field):

Admission to the graduate program, if all requirements are fulfilled, is based only on scientific qualification and performance at the interview.

The time line of the next IMPRS-CMB selection is:
  • online registration: activated from 2nd March 2020
  • deadline for application: 13th April 2020 (24:00 Central European Time)
  • deadline for submission of reference letters: 19th April 2020 (24:00 CET)
  • Interview in Dortmund: 1st - 3rd July 2020

Once the application phase is concluded, the coordination office and faculty members will review all complete applications.

Candidates will be short-listed based on their academic qualifications, motivation letter, scientific background and recommendation letters.

The interview will take place at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund.
IMPRS-CMB provides support regarding VISA application and reimburses ALL costs for travel and accommodation during the interviews. Invited candidates will be interviewed by a panel of faculty members, after which, they will meet the group leaders in one to one interviews. Moreover, there will be also the chance to meet our current students to learn more about our program and the ongoing research in the participating groups.
