PhD Project on new optogenetic tools in the Gottschalk lab, Frankfurt, Germany

The Gottschalk lab at Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, seeks a PhD student (for up to 3 years, with the option of extension, at 65% E13, TV-G-U), in a French-German collaborative project, to generate and establish novel optogenetic tools based on microbial rhodopsins, for manipulation of plasma and intracellular membrane ion fluxes with light. Tools will be tested in Caenorhabditis elegans, and the most promising proteins will be analyzed, in collaboration, by structural biology. Prerequisites for the position are enthusiasm for basic research in cellular neurobiology, a pro-active style of working, and ability to think independently. A solid background in molecular and cellular neuroscience, as well as hands-on experience in molecular biology is expected. Ideally, you have previous experience in electrophysiology and in programming (Matlab, Mathematica or LabView). Experience in working with C. elegans is beneficial, but not a must. An MSc or Diploma in Neurobiology, Biology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology is required.
