PhD Student - Cell biology of HCV replication

The Heinrich Pette Institute - Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), is committed to research on the biology of different human viruses as well as the pathogenesis of viral diseases (http://www.hpi-hamburg.de). The HPI offers the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in a world-class research environment with excellent technical and animal facilities.

We invite applications for a PhD student position in the research group “HCV Replication” of Dr. Eva Herker.

The group studies virus-host interactions using cell culture models of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection. We are especially interested in how the virus alters the lipid droplet metabolism in infected cells to support its own replication and to identify novel host factors involved in HCV assembly, maturation, and egress. The specific PhD project will focus on the molecular mechanism and timing of HCV assembly and release using state of the art microscopy and molecular biology techniques.

We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented student with a diploma/master degree (or equivalent) and experience in at least one of the disciplines and related techniques of cell biology, molecular biology, or molecular virology. Prior experience with microscopy techniques and image analysis would be an asset. The HPI offers the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in a world-class research environment with excellent technical facilities.

Starting at earliest possible date, the position is initially funded for up to three years with the possibility of extension. Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TV-AVH (salary agreement for public service employees). For further information, please visit the website (http://www.hpi-hamburg.de/en/research-teams/junior-research-groups/HCV-replication/) or contact Dr. Eva Herker directly (eva.herker@hpi.uni-hamburg.de).

Handicapped applicants will be preferred in otherwise similar qualification, competence, and professional performance.
