The DZIF is a center of excellence within the Helmholtz Association that performs translational research on infectious diseases. The new research group “Clinical Genomics in Healthcare associated Infections” (Group Leader Matthias Willmann) at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene in Tübingen, Germany, is currently looking for a

PhD Student (f/m) in Functional and Comparative Genomics

starting from April 1st, 2016.

The research group focuses on the analysis of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of nosocomial pathogens as well as the analysis of clinically relevant virulence and transmission factors. To this end, we combine next-generation sequencing methods with conventional epidemiological methodology and the morbidostat system.
We are searching a highly motivated student with an excellent academic record in the natural sciences (e.g. biochemistry, biology, biotechnology), preferably with background knowledge in molecular biology, next-generation sequencing, or bioinformatics. Applicants should have a high degree of self-motivation, good interpersonal skills, flexibility, excellent command of written and spoken English and the ability to work independently. The successful candidate will work on a project investigating the evolution of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms under different in vitro conditions simulating various clinical situations. The project involves handling custom built equipment. Technical aptitude is an advantage. A close cooperation with the Max-Planck-Institute for Developmental Biology offers access to state-of-the-art analysis technologies, including the novel morbidostat system.

We offer:
  • An interesting and challenging task in a research environment that applies innovative methodologies on future topics in healthcare associated infections
  • A multidisciplinary research group characterized by a strong focus on clinical science
  • A high potential for the individual development of our employees
  • Employment, payment and social benefits are consistent with those at other research institutes
  • The position is initially limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension
The DZIF is an equal opportunity employer. The DZIF is committed to employing disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
