PhD student position (m/f) in the Laboratory of Development and Cancer

The group of Prof. Dr. Mirka Uhlirova at the University of Cologne is seeking talented, creative and motivated researchers to elucidate cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenesis of the most common blindness disorder, Retinitis pigmentosa using Drosophila and mouse models.


The available project focuses on investigating how alterations of the essential and ubiquitous process of pre-mRNA splicing contribute to genome instability and tissue-specific disease. The candidates will combine state-of-the-art genetic approaches and imaging with tools of cell biology, biochemistry and genomics.

Candidates should have expertise in molecular and cell biology techniques, and have an interest in utilizing high-throughput genomic technologies. Solid background in Drosophila genetics is desired, and knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools is welcome. Experience in handling mice is an advantage but not necessary. Good communication skills, fluency in spoken and written English, and the ability to work in a team are essential.

Our group is affiliated with the Institute of Genetics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Cologne, and part of the Cologne Cluster of Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases (CECAD). The position is available from June 1st, 2016. The initial contract is limited for three years. The salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale (65% position) if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.
