The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) is a research institute of the      
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association, which is financed by the Federal State of Thuringia and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 50% each. The main focus of research is to delineate basic molecular mechanisms and its consequences for the development of dysfunctions and aging-related diseases. Around 350 employees work and conduct research at the FLI, with about 25% international employees from approximately 30 nations. 

The Computational Biology Group (Hoffmann Research Group) of the Leibniz Institute on Aging—Fritz-Lipmann-Institute e.V. in Jena invites applications for a PhD student position (TV-L E13/2 ) (Job ID 1805)

We are currently seeking a motivated and talented scientist to join our team as PhD student in the Molecular Biology Lab led by Dr. Martin Fischer as part of the Computational Biology Group headed by Prof. Dr. Steve Hoffmann.
We study how transcription factors control gene regulatory networks. For example, the transcription factor p53 serves as a central suppressor of tumor progression. It controls cell proliferation and apoptosis by regulating a plethora of target genes. However, it is not clear how p53 regulates many of its target genes, what factors besides p53 itself are necessary for up or downregulation and what their regulation contributes to a normal or cancer cell. Our incomplete picture of the molecular basis of p53-dependent gene regulation remains a critical gap to our overall understanding of tumor suppression.

The contract conditions and the salary will be according to the collective labor agreement for public service employees of the Federal State of Germany (TV-L E13), 50 % during the first two years and 60 % during the last two years.
 
Methods:
· The project is interdisciplinary involving molecular biology experiments and computational analyses
· Cell culture work including transfections
· Molecular biology (Cloning, RNA and DNA extraction, real time RT-PCR, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, DNA affinity purification, SDS PAGE and Western Blot)
· RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq including data analysis
 
Your Profile:
· Recent degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Biology or a related discipline of the Life Sciences
· Strong background in molecular biology (experience in the methods described above)
· Strong commitment and work ethic
