PhD student positions for research on bacterial biofilms

The Max Planck Research Group of Knut Drescher is looking for
PhD students with experience in molecular microbiology,
to start in the fall/winter of 2015 or early 2016. The lab is located at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg, Germany.

The research will focus on understanding how and why bacteria form multicellular communities known as “biofilms”, using state-of-the-art methods from genetics, molecular microbiology, and ecology. Biofilms are inherently resistant to antibiotics and cells within biofilms display cellular differentiation akin to development in eukaryotic systems. How these effects arise in biofilms is largely unclear. Experience in molecular microbiology is required to apply for these positions.

More details about the Max Planck Research Group of Knut Drescher can be found at http://drescherlab.org .

The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the neighboring University of Marburg form one of the largest clusters of microbiology research in Europe and offer a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment with facilities for genomics, proteomics, robotics, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry.

As an equal opportunity employer, the Max Planck Society is committed to employing more individuals with disabilities. We therefore actively encourage individuals with disabilities to apply. We also seek to increase the percentage of female employees in areas where they are under-represented. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to k.drescher@mpi-marburg.mpg.de . Please include your CV, a short statement on why you want to join the lab, and the names and contact details of academic referees, and combine all documents into a single PDF file. Applications will be reviewed on September 13th, 2015, but applications are considered after this date until the positions are filled.
