The research group of ‘Molecular Mechanotransduction’ is inviting applications for a
PhD position in Cell Biology and Biophysics
Field of work
The focus of our research group is to understand how cells sense and respond to their mechanical environment. To analyze the mechanobiology of cells, we have pioneered a technique that allows the analysis of piconewton forces across individual molecules in cells. In this interdisciplinary project, we will use our techniques to investigate the mechano-biological function of a central cell adhesion protein. Together with other state-of–the-art microscopy methods (e.g. FLIM/FRET, FRAP, super-resolution microscopy) we will determine the subcellular tension profile across the molecule of interest, and proteomic approaches will be used to identify molecular mechanisms of force transduction. In addition, we will use genetically-modified mice to test the relevance of the identified mechanotransduction pathways under physiological conditions. Thus, the successful candidate will receive expert training in:
  • performing a range of standard molecular and cell biological techniques
  • designing and implementing state-of-the-art microscopy experiments
  • carrying out data analyses using custom-written protocols
  • handling genetically-modified mice and perform histological analyses
  • coordinating research projects and write research manuscripts

Your qualifications
Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious and have an excellent academic record. Further eligibility criteria are:
  • M.Sc. in biological sciences or physics
  • proficiency in English
