Master Thesis Position: Optimization of Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Marine Macroalgae Biomass and Screening for Polysccharidases

Based on their chemical composition, macroalgae are an attractive third generation feedstock for oleo-chemicals and surfactants. Macroalgae are available in large quantities and can be easily collected from coastal regions, e.g. from the North and Baltic Sea. Various enzymes will be evaluated to hydrolyze the marine biomass and to get access to the enclosed carbohydrates. A meta-genomics approach will be carried out in the project, aiming to identify hydrolytic enzymes that are specific for the composition of macroalgae carbohydrates.
Responsibility and Tasks:
  • Enzymatic hydrolysis of  macroalgae biomass (optimization of enzymes mixture and hydrolysis conditions)
  • Biomass Analysis (protein, lipids and sugars) macroalgae biomass.
  • Screening for enzyme activity from environmental samples.
  • Biochemical characterization and Proteomic identification of screened enzymes.

  • HPLC, GC-FID, GC-MS, MALDI-TOF-MS and 96-well plate reader…
  • Protein characterization techniques SDS-page, IEF-Page, FPLC…
  • Screening techniques: λ-ZAP library, Auto-picker…
  • Optimization of hydrolysing in Lab and technical scale.

Student from biology, biotechnology, biochemistry or equivalent courses are sutable candidate. High team spirit and communication skills, as well as an independent operation are important charachteristics. Experience in the areas of responsibility listed above are an advantage.
