5 PhD fellow (d/f/m) positions in the area of protein engineering | biocatalysis | biofunctionalized materials

DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials is a research institution financed by the Federal Government and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is member of the Leibniz Association and is located at the Campus Melaten of the RWTH Aachen University. Here international young and experienced scientists belonging to different disciplines develop interactive materials according to the principles of nature.

The core competence of the research group of Prof. Schwaneberg (www.biotec.rwth-aachen.de) is the evolutionary and rational design of proteins. Our projects range from basic research to elucidate structure-function relationships and their modeling, methodological developments for Directed Evolution, and optimization of biocatalysts, and use of peptides to funtionalize materials (health applications).

Activities and responsibilities

For 5 third party funded projects, we are looking for PhD fellows with an exceptional record.

Qualification profile

The candidates should hold a master degree in life sciences, biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry or related area and have profound knowledge in, molecular biology. Further requirements are the capability of conducting independent research, expertise in scientific writing, amenability to work with project partners, and good communication skills in English. Proficiency in German is advantageous.

We are looking for enthusiastic and talented PhD fellows with:
• Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience in latest molecular biology techniques
• Expertise in bioanalytical techniques
• Experience in enzyme assay development and protein engineering (beneficial)
• Basic knowledge in computational biology (YASARA, PyMOL), and eager to gain deeper understanding in these methods (beneficial)
• Creative and flexible thinking,interested to work interdisciplinary
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team as well as independently

The Group of Prof. Schwaneberg offers a highly international and stimulating research environment with state-of-the-art equipment. The Institute is well funded and provides a creative and interdisciplinary worikng atmosphere.

The PhD positions are to be filled as soon as possible and are funded in the first year with 50 % and in the second and third year with 65% salary. Remuneration is done under similar conditions as the collective agreement for public service of the federal states (TV-L).
