The Fraunhofer-Institute for molecular biology and applied ecology conducts research at the interface between academia and industry in the field of applied life sciences from a molecular level to entire ecosystems. Our interdisciplinary organization and our modern laboratories, equipped with state-of the art infrastructure, offer a broad research and development portfolio.

The division Industrial Biotechnology at the location in Aachen deals with a diverse range of topics. Some of them belong to the elucidation of the function of selected enzymes or entire biosynthetic pathways for the synthesis of natural products, e.g. secondary metabolites. The focus of the working group lies in the metabolic engineering of syngas-fermenting bacteria, which are intended to be used as biocatalysts for the synthesis of biofuels and bulk chemicals. The aim is to recycle large amounts of emitted industrial waste gas (a mixture of CO2, CO and H2) to produce valuable basic products for industry. The effect would be to preserve fossil fuels and concomitantly decrease CO2 emission to reduce ongoing climate change. For the expansion of the natural product spectrum of these bacteria we introduce complex biosynthetic pathways heterologously and investigate the cultures according to their product accumulation using GC-MS measurements. Potential bottlenecks can be determined at the level of transcript, protein and pathway intermediates to allow a straight forward optimization of the strains. After a successful proof-of-concept phase the current goal is to increase the product yield for application in industrial processes. Therefor classical methods like chemical mutagenesis and modern approaches like CRISPR/Cas9 can be used for strain development.

  • Fermentation of bacteria in small scale and in syngas-fermenters at 3.7 L scale
  • Product analysis using GC-MS
  • High troughput screening
  • Generation, characterization and optimization of producer strains

What we expect from you
  • Masters degree in biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or a comparable field of study
  • Good experience in classical and / or modern cloning techniques
  • Ideally, you have knowledge in microbiology of anaerobic bacteria and fermentation
  • Expertise in application of chemical analysis (GC/MS, LC/MS and HPLC) is an advantage
  • Enrolement at a german university
  • good command of German and English (spoken and written)
