Master/Diploma Thesis for the project:

“Chemical synthesis of bioactive compounds and the evaluation of their cosmetic and/or food application“

Project description:
The aim of this project is the synthesis of different derivatives by means of organic synthesis starting from a lead compound. Using cell-based assay systems, the purified products will be investigated for their bioactive properties, which are interesting for the application in cosmetics or food, e.g. anti-aging, tanning or whitening properties and anti-microbial activity.

We offer the opportunity to extend knowledge in the following methodologies:
  • Chemical synthesis and compound purification techniques
  • Determination of the chemical and physical properties by state of the art techniques
  • Investigation of the biological activity of each compound using cell-based screening assays and microbial cell systems
Necessary skills:
  • M.Sc. student in Chemistry or Biochemistry with focus on Chemical Synthesis or Organic Chemistry
  • Highly motivated and keen to independently push a project
  • Capability to perform a literature study on chemical synthesis strategies and the ability to independently plan and perform chemical syntheses are required
  • Hands-on experience in chemical synthesis with reflux, distillation, compound purification (column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography) and crystallization are a must
  • Analytical skills in gas- and liquid-chromatography and 1HNMR are helpful
