The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) contributes to an improved understanding and reliable prediction of hydrologic and biogeochemical processes in terrestrial systems. At IBG-3, modeling of the terrestrial system in supercomputer environments and the analyses of large data sets constitute central components of scientific and applied research. IBG-3 is also member of the Centre of High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems (HPSC TerrSys), Geoverbund ABC/J, Germany (www.hpsc-terrsys.de). IBG-3 and HPSC TerrSys maintain a leading position in the development and application of parallel software technologies in the geosciences.

We are offering a

PhD position in the field of informatics, computer sciences, software engineering

Activities and responsibilities

  • You will develop a next generation software infrastructure for heterogeneous, massively parallel supercomputer hardware of the Jülich Supercomputer Centre (JSC) based on existing parallel scientific software (parflow.org).
  • Research involves the application of advanced parallel profiling and tracing technologies and new programming paradigms for GPU accelerators.
  • The project is performed in collaboration with research groups at JSC, the Colorado School of Mines and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA.
  • The position offers the unique possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team with state-of-the-art supercomputer technologies.

Qualification profile

  • university degree (Master) in computer science or related fields
  • documented experience in parallel programming with C/C++, Fortran and/or Python in the realm of supercomputer environments
  • experience in GPU programming is an advantage
  • ability to cooperate in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • very good communication and organization skills
  • very good English language skills
