PostDoc/Team Leader “Molecular Biology” in cell culture-based vaccine production

Job description
The Bioprocess Engineering Group of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems seeks an outstanding candidate for a position as a Postdoc/Team leader “Molecular Biology” in cell culture-based vaccine production. The candidate should be proficient in molecular biology methods, such as cell transfection, real time PCR, Western Blot, flow cytometry to develop methods for the characterization of virus-host cell interaction (i.e. influenza virus, Modified Vaccinia Ankara virus, flaviviridae), tools for the design of animal cells lines, and methods for monitoring intracellular virus replication.

The Bioprocess Engineering Group provides an excellent international environment for top-notch basic and applied research. We are organized in five teams (molecular biology, upstream processing, downstream processing, bioprocess analytics, and mathematical modeling) and perform high-level research in the fields of medical and environmental biotechnology. Our research activities are closely linked to research activities at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg.

Candidates must have a PhD or an equivalent degree in a relevant discipline and a record of outstanding research that demonstrates originality addressing significant problems in animal cell culture and virology using state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques. We expect the successful candidate to have profound experience in the characterization of virus-host cell interaction and the design of animal cell lines for production of biologicals. Skills in the supervision of technicians and students are desirable. Close collaboration with the teams involved in upstream processing and mathematical modeling of virus dynamics is essential. You must be fluent in English, proficiency in German is preferred.

Conditions of employment
We offer a position according to the German public pay scale (TVöD). The appointment is for two years with possibility for extension.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. The goal is to enhance the percentage of women in functions where they are underrepresented.
