Modulating cell division with supra-molecular chemistry

A PhD position is available to work in the research group of Andrea Musacchio at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, Germany. The Musacchio group studies the molecular basis of cell division. Its main focus is in the reconstitution and characterization of large macromolecular assemblies named kinetochores, which mediate the interaction of chromosomes with microtubules during cell division. The project will develop in close collaboration with supra-molecular chemistry groups within the Collaborative Research Centre 1093 (https://www.uni-due.de/crc1093/). The CRC wants to promote a deeper understanding of the underlying principles of protein recognition, manipulation and functional modulation by external agents. The specific PhD project aims to identify supramolecular ligands that modulate (e.g. interfere or enhance) macromolecular interactions within kinetochores and that are crucial for accurate chromosome segregation. For further information on the research and publications from the Musacchio group, please visit the web page:

Applicants need a master or diploma in Chemistry or related fields and should be highly motivated to work in basic research. Experience in handling proteins is desirable but not strictly required. The project will benefit from an excellent scientific environment, state of the art equipment, central facilities and a graduate program of the Collaborative Research Center 1093 at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Salary is according to TV-L E13 (67%) and is initially available for three years with a starting date of September 2015 or earlier.
Please use for application the CRC 1093 Application Form (https://www.uni-due.de/crc1093/en/jobs.php) and send your application by e-mail to antje.peukert@mpi-dortmund.mpg.de. Application deadline is June 30, 2015.
The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunities employer.
