in Berlin-Adlershof is looking, as soon as possible, for a

Ph.D. Student (f/m)
having graduated in Chemistry or Physics

salary scale 13 TVöD, 65 % of the standard weekly hours,
temporary contract for 18 months, with the option on additional 18 months

Your tasks with us are:
Development of an instrument for the multifunctional diagnostics of laser ablation plumes relevant to materials analysis and biomedical applications, in particular
•    the construction of an instrument for interferometric, Schlieren, and shadowgraphic imaging of small absorbing/refracting particles, aerosols and compression waves and
•    the study of laser-induced plasmas, ablation plumes, levitated micro-droplets, and recoil trajectories in MS- (mass spectrometric) interfaces by means of this instrument.
•    Besides the development, testing and optimization of the experimental systems, your task evolves around taking spectroscopic measurements and processing data using modern computational techniques.

What we expect from you:
•    a master or diploma degree in physical/analytical chemistry or experimental physics (optics)
•    good knowledge in general physics, physical optics and statistical data processing
•    good programming skills and the ability to work with Matlab, LabView, and other common software
•    interest and preferably experience in building optical systems and operating laser spectroscopic instrumentation
•    knowledge of English is a must, knowledge of German is a plus
•    creativity, motivation, social skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
