Empa is the interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development of the ETH Domain

The Group of Functional Membranes in the laboratory Protection and Physiology located at Empa St. Gallen is looking for a:

PhD student in Chemistry, Material Sciences and/or Nanotechnology to conduct research in the field of microfluidic technologies

The candidate will be involved in a SNF project where localization and controlled integration of functional matter on surfaces is anticipated employing new microfluidic platforms. Moreover, this technology will advantageously be used to conduct controlled chemical treatments at specific locations inside the microfluidic platform and on surfaces.

Your tasks
 
  • Design, study and characterization of platforms that enable a controlled crystal growth and rationalized chemical treatment on surfaces and their fabrication
  • Electrical characterization of the materials used and their study as functional matter
  • Organic chemical synthesis of new molecular building blocks
  • Publication of results in scientific journals and at international conferences
Your profile
 
  • Master in nanotechnology, chemistry and/or materials sciences
  • Skills and expertise in organic synthesis and electronics
  • Knowledge in advanced drawing software such as AutoCAD
  • Good knowledge of English is a requisite and preferably has good knowledge of German
