The Laboratory for Protection and Physiology is seeking a
PhD Student in the area of Polymer Chemistry
The activities of the student will be on the development of single and multiresponsive polymers with focus on transdermal delivery of active substances. In the last years we have focused on the development of light-, pH-, and redox-responsive materials. Although we could develop successful systems based on one or more of these stimuli-responsive materials, they all suffer from drawbacks such as limited light-stability, poor mechanical properties of the formed membrane, and small range of property switching. The successful candidate will then be responsible for improving the performance of these materials for both delivery and sensing applications. Systems with either light responsive units, or magneto responsive particles will be designed, including synthesis of photochromes, polymer synthesis, improvement of the mechanical and permeation properties. In the last year of the project, we foresee a multi-responsive material combining both systems to be developed.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong background in Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry, ability to work in a multidisciplinary field and open to learn new things. The PhD candidate needs to be proficient in spoken and written English and has a Master's degree.

The work will be carried out at Empa in St. Gallen under supervision of Dr. Luciano F. Boesel. The academic supervisor will be Prof. Nico Bruns at the Univ. of Freiburg (CH). The position will be available from June 2015 with a planned project duration of three (to four years).
