1 PhD position "Novel factors involved in protein transport in mitochondria"

Part-time position (65%), starting date: 01.07.2016

The Research Training Group is funded by the DFG and focuses on the characterization of transport processes at a molecular level. The doctoral researchers examine the transport of ions, metabolites and proteins across and in the cell membrane using a huge variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques.
The three‐year structured program consists of lecture series, seminars, method courses, a summer school, and symposia. In addition, participants will be offered the possibility to attend courses for individual needs. Successful candidates will be awarded the PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.). The program is taught in English.
The PhD position is open in the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Becker laboratory ( and deals with novel factors involved in transport of proteins to respiratory chain complexes in mitochondria.
The most prominent function of mitochondria is the oxidative phosphorylation driven by the respiratory chain. Respiratory chain complexes consist of nuclear and mitochondria-encoded subunits embedded into the inner membrane of mitochondria. How these proteins assemble into a functional protein complex is poorly understood. Defects in the biogenesis of the respiratory chain complexes are linked to severe diseases. Nuclear-encoded subunits are synthesized on cytosolic ribosomes and are imported via the presequence- translocase (TIM23 complex) into and across the inner membrane. Surprisingly, several TIM23 components also mediate the assembly of the respiratory chain complexes. In the PhD project we will examine the intriguing model that protein import into mitochondria is coupled to the formation of the respiratory chain complexes. For this analysis innovative techniques in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology such as protein- protein-interaction studies, activity assays, blue native electrophoresis and protein import and assembly assays will be used. We offer a well-equipped workspace and an active international team. We are looking for highly- motivated candidates, experience in protein biochemistry or cell biology is preferable.
