Ph.D. project

on “Biomaterials based actuators”.

Aims of the project:
Materials, which reveal property changes upon externally applied stimuli, offer an enormous potential for application in engineering and life sciences. Biomaterials based actuators that respond to modified environmental parameters with shape changes are particularly promising for medical products. As we could recently demonstrate, such “intelligent biomaterials” can conveniently be synthesized by treatment of suitable biopolymers with energetic electrons. The aims of this Ph.D. project are twofold: Firstly, parameter-property-relationships will be explored by systematic variation of the synthesis conditions. They will then be the basis for demonstration of tailored actuator prototypes. Besides experiments, also computer simulations can be employed to achieve the project goals. Extensive resources and know-how in all relevant areas are directly available within the group.

Outstanding candidates with a strong background in physics, materials science, chemistry or related disciplines and (in the case of computer modeling) programming skills are encouraged to apply. A complete M.Sc. / Diploma degree, as well as fluency in English are prerequisite.

The position is for 2 years with the option of renewal. Salary will be on the German TV-L 13 scale.

Working hours:
Working hours comply with the German TV-L regulations - 20 h/week (1/2 position).
