PhD position for 3 years at the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis in Rostock

Leibniz-Institut für Katalyse e. V. - LIKAT Rostock

The Leibniz Institute for Catalysis at the University of Rostock offers a PhD position for 3 years

Exploring the nature of active chromium catalysts during tetramerization of ethylene by (coupled) operando spectroscopy

The LIKAT Rostock is one of the leading European Research Centres in the field of catalysis. Major goals of our scientific work are the elaboration of knowledge in basic research in all areas of catalysis as well as the transfer of results into technical applications.

Linear olefins such as 1-hexene and 1-octene being building blocks for polymer production, are produced by homogeneous catalytic ethylene oligomerization using complex Cr catalysts. Reaction mechanisms are still controversial, probably due to the lack of relevant studies under true operation conditions. In this project, reliable structure-reactivity relationships shall be derived from working catalysts using a tailored combination of spectroscopic operando techniques (EPR, XAS, XES, UV-vis, FTIR-ATR and Raman spectroscopy) with special emphasis on couplings of several methods in the same experiment (e. g.  Raman/ATR/UV-vis and EPR/XAS) since this widens the range of accessible information under exactly comparable conditions. The influence of dedicated modifications of the PNP ligand, the Cr precursor and/or the aluminium activator will be studied.
