PhD position organic chemistry of natural products

The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – (HKI, investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The Junior Research Group Chemical Biology of Microbe Host Interactions headed by Dr. Christine Beemelmanns offers a

PhD position

for three years initially within the field of Organic Chemistry.

The successful candidate will work on the total synthesis of new microbial signaling molecules.

Project Outline: We are interested in new natural products with unique structural features and biological function. We apply total synthesis to validate the postulated structures and to allow more detailed structure-activity studies. The project aims for the total synthesis of complex natural products, which are involved in the modulation of specific microbe-host interactions. In order to test the bioactive natural products in established bioassays in collaboration with other groups, an efficient synthetic strategy is needed. By using a broad range of different synthetic transformation, the PhD candidate should develop a robust and modular approach with minimal use of protection group to ensure a highly atom-economic and efficient total synthesis. Using the newly developed strategy, the synthesis of structural derivatives and the implementation of (additional) functionalities such as fluorescence tags are envisaged.

Our requirements:
  • A Master degree (or equivalent) in chemistry. Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcome to apply!
  • Very good theoretical and practical skills in Organic Synthesis and Analytical Chemistry
  • An integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in a lively community of the HKI, and the associated graduate schools JSMC and ILRS.
  • Very good communication and writing skills (English)
We offer you a challenging interdisciplinary project, with state-of-the-art instrumentation, and great work opportunities in a dynamic research institute with high reputation. As a PhD student, you will be a member of the International Leibniz Research School (ILRS Jena), which offers an excellent structured postgraduate education.
Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). As an equal opportunity employer the HKI is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and therefore especially encourages them to apply.

About Leibniz-Institut für Naturstoff-Forschung und Infektionsbiologie

The Leibniz-Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (HKI) identifies and investigates natural products produced by microorganisms, mainly fungi, to understand their role as mediators of biological communication and to use them for the elucidation of cellular processes. Furthermore, scientists at the Institute are interested in understanding the pathobiology of...
