AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, the Austrian research institute with European format which focuses on the key infrastructure issues of the future, is looking to strengthen its team with the immediate appointment of a
 
Master Thesis “Document reading using photometric stereo on a mobile device”
 Optically variable devices and inks are security features used to ensure authenticity of personal documents, bank notes, credit cards, products etc. Human visual inspection of those security devices relies on changing appearance when shown or illuminated under varying angle. Document readers, especially mobile devices, typically do not check optically variable features. A small add-on illumination device should turn a smartphone into a mobile document reader capable of verification of optically variable security features.
 
Work Description:
  • Literature and market study to analyze the state of the art
  • Requirements analysis
  • Design and construction of illumination device
  • Implementation of image acquisition and analysis software
  • Final testing and presentation
     
Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in Informatics, Mathematics, Physics or a related field
  • Experience in development of applications for mobile devices
  • Ingenuity in constructing mechanical prototypes
  • Knowledge in image processing and computer vision
  • Good English skills
  • Interest in creating accessible smart devices
