Ph.D position - app development

For research and teaching at the Chair of “Internet Technologies and Systems“ (Prof. Meinel), in co-operation with the Vienna Vaccine Safety Initiative at the Charité, we are currently seeking a highly-qualified
PhD Student (m/f).


Together with the Vienna Vaccine Safety Initiative e.V., a Berlin-based academic NGO, we will devel-op a VaccApp, helping parents to maintain a better overview of the vaccination of children and the rest of the family.

Existing web-user-interfaces/data entry systems are currently being implemented for Tablet-PCs and Smartphones (Android, iOS). Existing proto-types of our Apps will be expanded further to in-clude new features in accordance with regulatory standards and requirements as well as implement-ing the innovation culture of Design Thinking. Some of the resulting features will be used by healthcare professionals in research and clinical practice, others by parents and children. Feasibility studies will be conducted by the PhD student in collaboration with our clinical team. Immediate user-feedback is encouraged from our clinical team, allowing ongoing improvements (rapid pro-totyping) towards a client-centered design and efficient workflow. Reliable data hosting & curation solutions will be important for the success of the project. Special attention will be paid to high-level data accuracy and safety in addition to data stand-ardization and interoperability. Ongoing, thorough documentation will be required throughout all stages of development, incl. central storage of source codes.

  • Education in Communication Science /Web Design/ Information Technology or a closely related field
  • Proficiency in mobile application development (in at least one of the following):
    • Java Android
    • Objective C/iOS
  • Track record of successfully completed app-development projects (incl. beta versions)
  • Experience with web development technologies (Django and Node.js in particular)
  • Experience with the design of user-friendly/interactive visualization concepts
  • Independent development, design and imple-mentation of elegant solutions for graphic user interfaces
  • Experience with international collaborative re-search projects in the areas of e-health/ public health
  • High motivation, commitment, flexibility and team orientation
  • Outstanding communication skills, in particular, excellent command of spoken and written English
  • Working hours: 40 hours peer week
  • Starting date: Effective immediately
