The HPI conducts internationally recognized research and offers high-quality Bachelor and Master programs in the field of IT Systems Engineering.
At the research group of Prof. Dr. h.c. Hasso Plattner, we are currently seeking to fill a position for a highly motivated

Ph.D. Student (m/f) in the field of Machine Learning and Computational Statistics for Enterprise Systems

The area of research aims at providing live state-of-the-art predictive analytics using multiple sources of business data, in particular the SAP Business Network. SAP Business Network handles over $650B B2B commerce annually. One of the goals of this research is to look at this data with the intention to create a new microeconomic model that can predict demand and forecast risks. This kind of model will help businesses better manage spend, change the buying behavior to reduce cost, and better manage suppliers based on risks. This includes detecting patterns, building predictive models from customer and public data, developing advanced algorithms for graph building, entity resolution, and extracting and classifying information from unstructured data.
Tasks may include, e.g.:
  • Application of machine learning techniques where the algorithm is capable of interactively querying information assets, data scientists and business analysts to determine risk and materiality of signals.
  • Development of a statistical global optimum that establishes maximum value for participants or minimal impact from negative events.
  • Creation of adaptive models that generate high-value insights (e.g., performance predictions, behavior classifiers)
  • Extension of cleansing and enrichment capabilities of a HANA based platform to include graph building using network-based artifacts (organizations, orders, invoices, products) and detect material signals.
We offer:
  • close links to industy, real-world use cases, and challenges in enterprise application development, data management, and design
  • international collaborations with SAP, hardware vendors (e.g. EMC, HP, Intel), top universities, and companies using enterprise software
  • a high-end working environment
We expect:
  • A master’s / diploma degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning or a related field.  As part of this education, the candidate will have knowledge of statistics and machine learning from both theoretical and application perspectives.
  • Experience in algorithm development
  • excitement for scientific work, publishing research papers, and conducting practical projects
  • a high degree of commitment, self-guidance, flexibility, and capacity for teamwork
  • the capability and willingness to familiarize oneself with new technologies
  • strong communication and presentation skills, fluent English in reading and writing
  • proven track record of successfully completed IT projects
  • curiosity for next generation enterprise applications, data management. and user-centered software design and engineering
  • prior knowledge in the area of enterprise software as well as German language skills are a plus
