Doctoral student (PhD) (m/f/d) in Computational Biology / Mathematics / Bioinformatics

A doctoral position in computational biology / (bio)mathematics / bioinformatics or related areas is available in Steffen Klamt’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg (Germany). Our group develops and applies methods and algorithms for the mathematical modeling and targeted modification of biological networks. One particular focus is the application of computational and model-driven approaches for the rational metabolic engineering of microorganisms to optimize biotechnological processes.

Activities and responsibilities

For a larger research project, we are looking for a talented doctoral student willing to work in an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should have an excellent degree or/and experience in one or several of the following fields:
  • Computational biology / Systems biology / Biomathematics
  • Mathematics (especially modeling / simulation / optimization)
  • Biosystems engineering / Bioprocess engineering / Chemical engineering

Qualification profile

Experiences in the following areas are of particular advantage (but no explicit requirement):
  • Programming experience in MATLAB, JAVA, or Python
  • Theory of mathematical modeling or/and mathematical optimization (e.g., linear and mixed-integer linear programming (LP / MILP))
  • Mathematical modeling and/or computational design of metabolic networks
  • Bioprocess or/and biosystems engineering
Some basic biological knowledge or/and experiences in working in interdisciplinary projects would be a plus but are again not mandatory.

We offer

The Max Planck Institute and our group offer excellent research opportunities in a stimulating and friendly environment. Salary and benefits are commensurate with TVöD-Bund. The position is immediately available (later starting date would be possible), initially for two years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the representation of women and persons with physical disabilities. We particularly encourage such individuals to apply.

Send application to

We ask the candidates to send their applications by 6 January 2020. However, there is no strict deadline and the call is open until the position is filled. Applicants should prepare a single PDF file containing an application letter, CV, certificates, a short statement of research interests, a brief description of scientific achievements (if applicable), and, if possible, contact information for two references. This PDF file should be sent to as soon as possible.

More information about our group can be found on the website

About Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Dynamical Systems

In 1996 the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems was established. The founding director is Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Ernst Dieter Gilles. The institute in Magdeburg is the first institute of the Max Planck Society dedicated to the engineering sciences and is intended to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial applications. At present 240 employees are...
