PhD Position (m/f/d) in Genetic Toolbox Development & Metabolic Engineering

A doctoral position is available in Steffen Klamt’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg (Germany). Our group develops and applies algorithms and computational techniques for mathematical modeling and targeted modification of biological networks. One particular focus is the application of computational methods for the rational metabolic engineering of microorganisms to optimize biotechnological processes.

Activities and responsibilities

For a research project - funded by The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) - that combines innovative computational and experimental techniques to establish Zymomonas mobilis as an industrial platform microorganism, we are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD who will jointly work in a dedicated interdisciplinary research team. Candidates should have an excellent degree or/and experience in one or several of the following fields:
  • biotechnology
  • metabolic engineering
  • microbiology
  • genetics
  • systems biology
  • synthetic biology
  • biochemical engineering / biosystems engineering

Qualification profile

Experiences in the following areas are of particular advantage:
  • Genetic engineering and bioreactor fermentations of Escherichia coli, Zymomonas mobilis or other prokaryotic microorganisms.
  • Genetic toolbox development for prokaryotic organisms
  • Strain development and metabolic engineering
  • Basic Knowledge in mathematical modeling of metabolic networks or model-based metabolic engineering is not mandatory but would be a plus

We offer

The Max Planck Institute and our group offer excellent research opportunities in a stimulating and friendly environment. Salary and benefits are commensurate with TVöD-Bund. The position is available from February 2020 (earliest starting date), initially for two years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Send application to

We ask the applicants to send their applications by January 16, 2020, although there is no strict deadline and the call is open until all positions are filled. Applicants should prepare a single PDF file containing an application letter, CV, certificates, a short statement of research interests, a brief description of scientific achievements including a publication list (optional), and contact information for two references. This PDF file should be sent to as soon as possible.
