The Geo.X research network for Geosciences is a strategic partnership of university and non-university institutions dedicated to multi- and inter-disciplinary geoscientific research in the metropolitan region of Berlin and Potsdam. Geo.X spans the whole range of geoscientific disciplines, ranging from space-borne earth observing systems, through atmosphere studies, to material sciences, earth surface dynamics and to the deep biosphere.

Our partner institutions aim at a joint Interdisciplinary Research School with an open call for PhD positions in the interdisciplinary area of Data Science as a methodological focus within the geoscientific research topics Natural Hazards and Risks and Geo-Bio-Interactions. Therefore we invite applications for up to a total of

14 Geo Data Scientist Positions
(3-year PhD positions)

We aim to train a new generation of young, interdisciplinary scientists with interdisciplinary skills in the intersection of mathematics, computer sciences, and geosciences. We call this intersection of three research areas “Geo Data Science”. With this, we focus on geoscientific challenges tackled by data science as a methodological core of all open positions. As a key element of this open call, each application has to include a short research proposal with an interdisciplinary research idea, including Data Science Methods as well as geoscientific challenges in Natural Hazards and Risks or in Geo-Bio-Interactions. We expect candidates to describe their own interdisciplinary research ideas within this framework.

With our Interdisciplinary Research School we offer a vibrant research environment that covers interinstitutional collaborations, interdisciplinary supervision, additional training courses (e.g. summer schools, workshops, and seminars organised by peers) and soft skills training. The doctoral training concentrates on providing interdisciplinary, methodoriented competences. In addition, an innovation forum will offer young scientists the opportunity to further develop their research results, making them available to the economy, the public sector and society. Our exchange and mentoring programmes will be exploited for increased integration into international communities.

Applicants (PhD candidates) at the time of appointment, should have a MSc degree or equivalent in at least one of the following fields as well as a strong affinity with interdisciplinary research: Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences, or related fields.
